Introduction
to She Who Has a Great Attitude
Ding-a-ling-a-ling…hello?
Chit-chat-chit-chat . . . Yadda,
yadda, yadda . . . Laugh, laugh,
giggle, snort, “Oh, by
way, did I tell you I have breast
cancer?”
That’s how I found out
my friend, Carrie, had been
diagnosed with stage-two breast
cancer.
Carrie and I met over a decade
ago. I signed up for one of
her adult watercolor classes
through the adult-education
program at our local college.
I was in one of those “I-gotta-do
-something-fun-or-this-dreary-north-Idaho-winter-weather-is-gonna-drive-me-stark-raving-mad”
moods. I did not choose this
class because I needed to explore
the medium of watercolor, but
rather because the program had
the word “Adult”
in the title. I was desperate
to have a meaningful conversation
with anyone who didn’t
call me “Mom.”
I walked into the room, and
there, standing at the head
of the class, was a wild, wacky
woman. Her looks, voice and
mannerisms personified the description
of a free-spirited artist living
in the woods of north Idaho.
Part mountain mama, part drama
queen, Carrie was an extraordinary
enigma that defied all description.
Paint was flying, she was barking
out instructions, and everyone
one in the room was laughing
hysterically. I smiled. I knew
this was just what I needed
. . .
Introduction to They
Who are Best Friends
I love having girlfriends.
I’ve been blessed by such
an abundance of different women
in my life, I can’t figure
out if God loves me so much
that he graced me with this
honor, or He figures I’m
so messed up I need all the
help I can get. Most likely
the latter . . . ’cause
I have lots of girlfriends.
I have beach friends and shopping
friends . . . yoga friends,
diet friends, and art friends…
phone friends, church friends
and neighbor friends. There
are friends I can call on the
spur of the moment for a “wild,
wacky women” vacation,
and others that require months
of planning. I have friends
to learn from and friends to
lean on . . . Friends to laugh
with and friends to cry with.
Then—apart
from all the rest—I have
Candy . . .
